Vegan Chickpea Patties Recipe


These wonderful and delicious vegan chickpea patties are not only delicious but soul-satisfying.

It goes very well with wraps, burgers, salads, or on its own.

Chickpeas, as we know, are full of protein, minerals, and fiber needed for a healthy body. Moreover, they are a great substitute for meat in a vegan diet.

This chickpea patty is a twist to the regular patties that are available at the market.

Ingredients for Vegan Chickpea Patties

1. Garbanzo Beans– This recipe calls for garbanzo(chickpea) beans. You can either use the store-bought cans or if you wish, you may soak the dry garbanzo beans for 4-5 hours and cook them until soft.

2. Potatoes– Potatoes help in kneading the patties as we aren’t using any flour in this recipe. However, you may switch to sweet potatoes instead of regular ones. I have tried this recipe with sweet potatoes, and it works wonderfully.

3. Cilantro– Cilantro adds a fantastic flavor to these delicious patties. Hence try not to skip them.

4. Rock salt/ Himalayan pink salt– I have used Himalayan pink salt to make these patties. However, you may choose a regular table salt or Kosher salt.

5. Oil for frying– I have used a tbsp of oil for frying the patties. However, if you would like to substitute oil, I suggest you use an air fryer.

6. Semolina Flour- I have used semolina flour to coat the patties before frying. It gives a nice crisp flavor. However, semolina is not gluten-free, so if you are gluten intolerant, I suggest using oat flour or rice flour.

Cooking Instructions

1. Firstly, boil two regular potatoes in a saucepan or cooker and keep them aside.

2. Next, add 1 cup of water to 1 ½ cup of chickpeas in a saucepan and cook them until it’s soft and can be mashed easily. (basically, a little overcooked) The chickpeas used here were soaked for 04 hours.

(If using the canned chickpeas, you may skip this step).

3. Then peel the boiled potatoes.

4. Then, In a large bowl, add the peeled potatoes and 1 ½ cup of cooked chickpea and mash it using a potato masher.

5. Add 01 finely chopped onion and 02 finely chopped green chilies.

6. Next, add ¼ cup chopped cilantro, ½ tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp black pepper powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp red chilly powder, 1 tsp Himalayan salt, and mix it well.

7. Then, add 1 tbsp olive oil, use your hands to knead the dough, form round patties, and keep them aside.

8. Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a pan, Then coat the patties with semolina flour and start placing them gently on a heated pan. (let them cook for 5 minutes, then flip and cook on the other side).

10. Enjoy the vegan patties with tomato ketchup or your favorite sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 medium-size potatoes
  • cup Chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
  • 1 medium-size onion
  • 2 green chillies
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 tsp himalayan salt (pink salt) or kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp coconut or any neutral flavored oil

Instructions
 

  • Start by boiling 02 medium size potatoes in a cooker or a saucepan.
  • Next, add 01 cup of water to 1½ cup of dry chickpea in a saucepan, cook until its soft and can be mashed easily, a little overcooking will help in easily mashing the chickpea.
  • Check if the potatoes are done and then peel the boiled potatoes.
  • In a wide bowl add the peeled potatoes and the cooked chickpeas and mash it using a potato masher.
  • Next, add 1 finely chopped onion and 02 finely chopped green chillies.
  • Then, add ¼ cup chopped cilantro, ½ tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp black pepper powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp red chilly powder, 1 tsp himalayan salt and mix until well incorporated.
  • Next, add 1 tbsp olive oil, use your hands and knead into a dough and then form round patties and keep it aside.
  • Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil or any neutral flavoured oil in a pan, dust the patties with semolina flour and start placing them gently on the heated pan.( let thwm cook for 05 minutes, then flip and cook on the other side).
  • Serve them hot with tomato ketchup or your favorite sauce.
