What is an Ice apple?

It’s a seasonal fruit available during the hot summer months from May to September and is known to have originated in India.

It iseveral names in different states of India, like taati munjali in Telugu, taati nungu in Tamil, and Tadgola in Marathi and Hindi. However, the botanical name is Borassus flabellifer. 

The fruit is said to have originated in India but is now widely cultivated in other Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Srilanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

It needs a tropical climate to grow. It has a purplish exterior that relates to an eggplant. However, the translucent, pale white flesh within resembles a fresh aloe, and the tase is almost similar to coconut water.

A 100g of ice apple contains a high 87% water, 8g of protein, and 1g of fiber. It is also rich in iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus.

It contains almost negligible amounts of fats and carbs.

How to consume Ice Apple?

Ice apple is loaded with water. Hence it’s advisable to consume it once the outer shell is removed.

It is highly perishable, and storing it may change the color and taste of the fruit as the sugar inside starts to break and ferment.
